Start with the principle

What you need to know

An unused reference appears in the reference list but cannot be matched to an in-text citation. Some assignments allow a bibliography of background reading, but a reference list normally contains cited sources.

A practical method

Check it step by step

  1. 01

    Confirm the list type

Check whether your institution requires a reference list, a bibliography or both.

  2. 02

    Match each entry

Search the document for the first author, organisation name or reference number.

  3. 03

    Check hidden locations

Review tables, figures, appendices and footnotes before deciding an entry is unused.

  4. 04

    Resolve the source

Remove accidental extras or add a citation only where the source genuinely supports the writing.

Examples

Reference list

Ali, R. (2022). Research skills for new undergraduates…

Problem

No Ali (2022) citation is found anywhere in the text.

Before submission

Final checklist

  • List type confirmed
  • Tables and appendices checked
  • Organisation authors searched
  • Alternative spellings checked
  • No citation added merely to keep a source

Course, university and publisher requirements vary. Confirm final punctuation, capitalisation and presentation against the guide you have been instructed to use.
